Stranraer v Ayr United | Match Report

The Honest Men picked up their first victory in pre-season as they coasted to a 3-1 victory at Stair Park.  United played some exciting and excellent football in the first half and went into the break two ahead thanks to goals from Shankland and Forrest.  In the second half, it was a more youthful Ayr side on show but they still added to their tally through Shankland again, this time from the penalty spot, before Layne pulled one back for the hosts.

It took only 3 mins for United to open the scoring, when neat play outside the box resulted in Moffat being set through then squaring for Shankland who made no mistake, carrying on last season's form, with a powerful finish high into the net.

The next real chance of the game fell to Moffat who got on the end of a Harvie cross, took a touch and curled the ball just wide of the left-hand post from around the edge of the area.

The hosts' first chance of the game came on 15 mins when Lidington's shot from 20 yards out went harmlessly wide of Hare-Reid's goal.

The Honest Men were totally in control and made it 2 on 31 mins.  Forrest got into space on the right, cut in, and curled a screamer into the top left corner to give Ayr a cushioned lead at 2-0.

It was only to take a minute after the restart for Ayr to add to their tally when they won a penalty on 46 mins.  Shankland made no mistake from the spot, cool as you like into the bottom right corner with the keeper sent the wrong direction.  3-0 Ayr.

As Ayr began to bring more and more youngsters, the tempo of the game dropped.  Stranraer, finding space which had been absent, came into the game and pulled a goal back through Layne.  The striker rushed onto a through ball and rounded Hare-Reid before slotting into the net to get the hosts on the scoresheet.

As the full-time whistle went, McCall and his team could feel pleased with the good workout and performance of the squad who now face a closed-door match on Saturday that wraps up the pre-season matches for the Honest Men
