On Wednesday, Ayr United Reserves took on Maybole Juniors in a pre-season friendly at the Marr College Astro Pitch in Troon.
It took the Reserves only 1 min to take the lead, Hewitt playing the ball down the wing to Skeoch who crossed into the 6- yard box where Leon Murphy scored from the rebound of Goma’s blocked shot.
For the next 15 mins, Ayr fashioned numerous chances, with both Murphy and Goma going close, and Skeoch’s driving runs down the wing and crosses into the box creating good opportunities for the forwards. 17 mins into the game and Ayr United doubled their lead from the penalty spot after McKenzie was the victim of a late tackle from Maybole keeper Peacock. McKenzie dusted himself down then stepped up to take the penalty, firing the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.
Maybole then tried to pull themselves back into the game and went close on several occasions with Graham doing well for United in goals. Ayr did not allow themselves to be forced onto the back foot with McKenzie, Smith, and Ecrepont all having shots saved by the Maybole keeper.
5 mins from the break, the Reserves made the scoreline 3-0 when Murphy drove towards goal, went one-on-one with Peacock, then slotted the ball home into the bottom left-hand corner. With 52 mins on the clock, Ayr took their total to 4. Smith played a great pass wide to Ecrepont who crossed into the box where Peacock saved from Murphy, but McKenzie was there to net the rebound.
5 mins later and Ayr thought they had scored again with Hewitt appearing too quick for the Maybole defence, then striking the ball into the net from a tight angle, but the referee blew for offside.
On 63 mins Maybole grabbed an impressive counter when Patterson struck a great freekick from the edge of the box into the bottom right-hand corner.
Although the remainder of the match was scoreless it was exciting none-the-less with Graham pulling off two excellent saves from Maybole’s Stevenson and McCulloch, while Ayr’s Smith, McKee, and Skeoch went close with shots at goal.
Ayr United Reserves are next in action on Saturday and Sunday (13th and 14th July) when they are competing in the 7 Saints Cup in Cumnock against Stranraer and BSC Glasgow.
